NPP Supporters Storm Parliament Amidst Leadership Dispute

Party Loyalists Rally at Parliament House

Hundreds of supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at Parliament House today, heightening tensions over the ongoing leadership tussle in the House. JoyNews’ Parliamentary Correspondent, Kwaku Asante, reports that more than ten Sprinter buses arrived, bringing enthusiastic supporters dressed in party colors and paraphernalia.

Supporters from Chief Whip’s Constituency Lead the Charge

The majority of the supporters reportedly came from the constituency of NPP Caucus Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh. Their presence signals strong backing for the NPP amid the leadership dispute triggered by Speaker Alban Bagbin’s contentious ruling on vacant seats.

Speaker’s Declaration Sparks Power Struggle

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant—three held by the NPP and one by the NDC. This announcement altered the power dynamics, with the NDC, now claiming 136 seats, asserting itself as the new Majority over the NPP’s 135 seats.

Supreme Court Issues Temporary Relief

The Supreme Court intervened on October 18, issuing a stay of execution on Speaker Bagbin’s decision. The court ruled that the four MPs whose seats had been declared vacant must continue representing their constituencies until the case is resolved.

NDC Stands Firm Despite Court Ruling

Despite the court’s intervention, the NDC caucus insists on retaining its claimed Majority status, arguing that the judiciary has no authority to interfere with Parliament, which operates independently. This has led to a standoff, leaving the leadership structure in limbo.

Uncertainty Looms as Parliament Reconvenes

As Parliament reconvenes today, the House is bracing for a critical session, with both sides grappling for control. The presence of NPP supporters adds further intensity to the unfolding drama, signaling unwavering party loyalty and support for their leadership. The political landscape remains tense as both parties await the next chapter in this evolving saga.
