The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has announced that the NDC minority caucus will not return to Parliament until after the December elections. This decision follows a Supreme Court ruling on November 12, 2024, overturning Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
The Supreme Court sided with Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who argued that Bagbin overstepped his authority by declaring the seats vacant without judicial oversight. Vanderpuye, speaking on Channel One TV, emphasized that the minority caucus would prioritize election preparations, dismissing any “unnecessary spending” involved in a recall before the polls.
“We won’t return to Parliament until after the elections,” he said. “Our focus is on the elections, and we will resume parliamentary duties only afterward. The numbers in the house will determine the true majority.” He further noted that neither the NPP nor the Supreme Court could decide who forms the majority in Parliament.
