Media personality Nana Yaa Brefo has spoken out for the first time regarding the GoFundMe campaign launched for broadcaster Kofi Adomah, despite the substantial $115,000 donation made by businessman Ibrahim Mahama to cover his eye surgery.
Her revelation comes in response to recent suggestions that Mahama did not fulfill his promise to support Kofi Adomah’s medical expenses, sparking public debate about whether the wealthy businessman truly came through for the ailing journalist.
Nana Yaa Brefo voiced her strong frustration towards those questioning Ibrahim Mahama’s dedication. She emphatically remarked, “Why would anyone believe he wouldn’t deliver on his promise? He is one of the wealthiest individuals in Ghana, possessing numerous properties.”
She went on to verify that Mahama truly honored his promise, detailing how he contacted her right after learning about Kofi Adomah’s situation.
He called me and inquired about the incident. I told him everything. He then asked, ‘How much is needed for the surgery?’ When I asked her [Kofi Adomah’s team], they said $120,000. I informed him, and he sent $115,000. That’s what we used for the first surgery,” Nana Yaa Brefo revealed.
She promptly explained the continued need for the GoFundMe campaign, despite Mahama’s generous donation. She pointed out that the initial accident—where gunpowder residue got into Adomah’s eyes while he was reporting on a funeral in Kumasi—impacted both of his eyes, and only the first surgery has been performed.
The initial surgery has been completed, but he still needs to undergo another procedure. This is why we’ve set up a new GoFundMe,” she explained.
In addition to the upcoming procedure, Nana Yaa Brefo mentioned that the team is also fundraising to cover additional costs, such as acquiring extra furniture and other essentials needed for Kofi Adomah’s recovery.
It’s not solely about the surgery; we also need to acquire additional furniture and manage various other aspects to increase our financial capacity,” she stated, encouraging the public to maintain their support.
