Lionel Messi has won a case against Spanish newspaper La Razon, after the news outlet published an article deemed to be slanderous by Barcelona‘s provincial court.
The article, written by journalist Alfonso Ussia, came after Argentina’s loss to Germany in the World Cup final, and criticised Messi’s role in the national side to an extent considered past the point of journalistic license.
The opinions expressed were adjudged to be injurious, resulting in Ussia and the paper’s director, Francisco Marhuenda, being ordered to pay €64,590.79 to the Ballon d’Or winner in damages.
“[Ussia’s comments were] unnecessary and impertinent for the exposition of the ideas or opinions that the journalist attempts to transmit in the article,” according to the court.
“And are objectively insulting and offensive despite the dimension of the player’s public image and the pluralism, tolerance and open spirit which should reign in a modern society”.
The paper had hoped the fact that it had been written in the form of an opinion piece would result in a positive outcome for them, but the decision went in Messi’s favour despite this.
It has been announced that the striker will donate the money to Doctors Without Borders.
