The Media Coalition Against Galamsey has announced a “Red Band” protest to be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, in solidarity with Organised Labour’s indefinite strike against illegal mining. Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Coalition, made the announcement during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, October 9.
Ashigbey stated that the protest is aimed at amplifying calls for the government to take stronger action against galamsey after failing to meet demands for a complete ban on illegal mining. Ghanaians are encouraged to show their support by wearing red armbands or headbands and tying red bands on cars, motorbikes, bicycles, and other vehicles.
“We must raise our voices louder than ever. The future of our land depends on it,” Ashigbey said.
The Coalition also urged participants to share photos and videos of their involvement on social media using the hashtags #StopGalamseynow, #SaveOurLand, and #SaveOurFuture. The protest will continue indefinitely until the government takes decisive action to end illegal mining and protect the environment.
