Mauricio Pochettino has committed his future to Tottenham Hotspur by signing a new five-and-a-half-year deal that will keep him in north London until 2021.
The Argentine manager verbally agreed to the new contract last month but has now put pen to paper on the long-term deal believed to be worth £5.5million per year.
Spurs announced the news on Twitter on Thursday and confirmed that first team coaches Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino and Toni Jimenez have also agreed contract extensions. It will come as a huge boost to Tottenham to tie down their impressive young manager, whose work at White Hart Lane has not gone unnoticed in the boardrooms of top rival clubs.
The 44-year-old and the club have concluded months of negotiations to extend his previous deal that still had three years to run until 2019 and the fresh terms make him the highest paid manager in the club’s history.
Pochettino said: ‘I could not be happier to sign this new contract. It was an easy decision for my coaching staff and I because we can feel the appreciation of everyone here – there is no better place to be right now.
‘The supporters are unbelievable, we have assembled a great group of players with huge potential that can get even better, while the facilities we have to work in are world-class. We also have an incredible new stadium to look forward to and now we are determined to build a side worthy of playing in such an exciting new venue.
We have enjoyed a great season and we believe this is just the beginning. We have a long-term project and huge belief that we can achieve something big here for the future.
‘This club has all the ingredients to continue to challenge at the very top in both the Premier League and in Europe and we want to be here to be a part of what I believe will be a special period in the Club’s history.’
Pochettino joined Spurs from Southampton two seasons ago and in his short time at the club he has transformed the whole ethos, revamped the squad and has led them to their highest-ever league finish in the Premier League era.
With one game remaining this season, the lowest Tottenham can possibly finish is third, a position that will see the club automatically qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.
Importantly for Tottenham supporters, the club will finish above bitter rivals Arsenal for the first time since the 1994-95 season if they avoid defeat against already-relegated Newcastle on Sunday.
Pochettino has helped develop some of the brightest young talent in the top flight in the past two season, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier thriving for club and country.
Under Pochettino, Spurs mounted a challenge for the title before ultimately coming up short in recent weeks but can boast the best defence in the Premier League.
Chairman Daniel Levy was desperate to secure Pochettino’s immediate future with Manchester United known admirers of the former Argentina defender.
Levy said: ‘We have seen Mauricio bring a tremendous spirit and ethos to our Club and embrace the attacking style of play with which we have always been associated.
‘He has built a squad of youth and experience and this season we have seen football played at the highest level – quite sublime at times.
‘Everyone at the Club is delighted he has agreed an extended contract and we all look forward to working with him in the coming seasons. I know he is as ambitious for our Club as we all are.’
