Refereeing Atletico Madrid’s first leg tie of the Champions League semi-final with Bayern Munich will be Englishman Mark Clattenburg.
On the international register for referees sine 2006, the 41-year-old has taken charge of both teams on numerous occasions, most recently Atleti’s goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven in the second round of the same competition.
Five other Rojiblancos games have been led by the Durham-born ref, including Europa League clashes with Lokomotiv Moscow (3-3), Thessaloniki Aris (1-0) and a 2-1 win over Hanover.
In the Champions League, he refereed a 4-1 win over AC Milan in 2013/14 and a clash with Malmo (2-0) the following season.
For Bayern, the Englishman’s presence is a good omen. They have three wins out of three matches under Clattenburg, all in the Champions League.
Basel (7-0), Juventus (2-0), and even Barcelona (3-2) have been dispatched under the Premier Leage ref’s watchful eye.
