Luis Suarez will head to the Copa America injured

Luis Suarez has been ruled out of the Copa America group stage, after picking up an injury during Barcelona’s Copa del Rey extra-time victory over Sevilla.

The ex-Ajax forward is certain to miss the first phase of the competition in America, and must rely on his international teammates to drag his nation through to a date where he will be fit for action.

His tears on the bench after being substituted had every reason to flow, with the medical reports showing that he picked up a serious muscle problem.

First thoughts were that the injury was a bad one, with the player diagnosed with a suspected hamstring injury after the final.

A scan in Barcelona confirmed the worst fears of Suarez, with his absence predicted to last around one month, although the striker wants to try and recover as quickly as is physically possible.

The club shared a statement on the event: “First-team player Luis Suarez has an injury to his right hamstring.”

However, Barcelona did not suggest a period of absence for their player, with Suarez determined to meet up with his international teammates who are set to fly out to America on June 1.

Uruguay are in Group C, along with Mexico, Jamaica and Venezuela.

If they progress, the window of opportunity opens for Suarez, as he hopes to make it back for the quarter-final stages of the competition.
