Lawrence Agyekum Admits Ghana’s Struggles in 2025 AFCON Qualifiers

Cercle Brugge midfielder Lawrence Agyekum has acknowledged Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, raising concerns about the Black Stars’ chances of reaching the tournament.

Following four underwhelming matches, Ghana’s hopes of qualifying are in jeopardy for the first time in two decades. A 0-0 draw against Sudan at home and a 2-0 defeat to Libya have left the team in a precarious position. Ghana currently sits third in Group F with only two points from four games, making qualification an uphill battle.

Speaking to Own Goal Nigeria, the 20-year-old midfielder, who is eligible to represent both Ghana and Niger, expressed his concerns about Ghana’s campaign. “Not too good for Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers, but they are doing well in the World Cup qualifiers,” Agyekum noted. “For Nigeria, the reverse is the case. I follow both closely and want to see them succeed.”

Agyekum, on loan at Cercle Brugge from RB Salzburg, has already gained valuable experience, with 13 appearances this season, including four in the Europa League. His remarks reflect the growing pressure on the Black Stars to turn things around in their remaining qualifiers.
