INVESTIGATE SOURCE OF EXCAVATORS IN FORESTS AND RIVERS – ATJAG

Alliance for Truth, Justice and Accountability has issued a press release asking government to investigate the source of excavators in the country.

In the press release, the group called upon government to probe the Transport Minister, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah. He was the only person authorized by cabinet to sign before an excavator could be brought into the country.

The authorization by cabinet came in 2019. A ban was placed on the importation of excavators and heavy duty digging machines. The directive was one of many used by government to fight galamsey.

To investigate the source of excavators would be to find out if they already in the country before the ban. If the excavators were brought after the ban, then the Transport Minister had a lot of questions to answer. This would mean he either did not perform his duties correctly or he was cahoots with the culprits.

The release stated, “Our group believes if the ban imposed by government had been strictly enforced, Ghana’s forests and river bodies would not have been inundated with excavators.”

Finally, the group called on the minister to answer the following questions:

  1. “How many excavators did he allow into the country since May 1st 2019?”
  2. “Is it true that officers of his ministry charged a pecuniary fee of $5000.00 for every machine allowed to be imported into the country?”
  3. “How many caterpillars and excavators were registered by the DVLA?”
  4. “What methods has his ministry put in place to monitor and ensure that these machines went to the purpose for which they were imported?
