IMANI’s PULSE: 82% Support for Mahama’s Call for Change

Optimistic Social Media Trends Boost NDC Campaign

In the run-up to Ghana’s 2024 elections, IMANI’s PULSE Episode 11 offers compelling insights into the campaign efforts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama. An analysis of over 20,000 social media posts from August to October 10, 2024, reveals a positive outlook for the NDC’s campaign.

Mahama’s Promises Strike a Chord with Online Audiences

The report shows a 72% positive sentiment for both Mahama and the NDC, with much of the public engaging enthusiastically with his promises focused on economic recovery and a “24-hour economy” policy. About 70% of discussions on these promises were positive, with only 30% reflecting negativity.

Public Sentiment Reflects Strong Support

IMANI’s emotional analysis found that 41% of comments conveyed admiration, while 36% were neutral. Criticism was relatively low, with only 18% of comments expressing disgust or anger. Central to Mahama’s campaign is his call for change, which has received overwhelming support—82% of related online discussions reflected positive sentiments.

Key Drivers of Support: Economic and Youth-Centric Policies

Religious endorsements, promises of rapid economic reforms, and youth-focused policies have fueled Mahama’s online momentum. However, not all feedback has been positive—his reluctance to participate in presidential debates and debates around his infrastructure legacy have attracted criticism.

Balancing Hopes and Criticism in a Tight Race

While Mahama enjoys growing public goodwill, his campaign faces scrutiny on some fronts. As the election season progresses, both the positive sentiments and criticisms will shape the narrative leading up to the crucial 2024 elections.
