On 21st February 2024, soldiers along with prisoners from the Awutu camp prison embark on gutter distillation at Kasoa market. Ten prisioners came for the distillation exercise. The prisoners distilled the gutters from one end of the overpass to the other end.
No one can phantom how these plastics and rubbers get into them because these gutters have been covered. Although there are spaces in them they are not big enough to have an item as big as a plastic chair.
Seeing the distillation exercise brought joy to the market women similarly, bringing sorrows to on lookers.
These gutters looked choked up, dirty, and filled with black stagnant water. In addition, the gutters gave out a foul scent therefore, traders had to wear nose mask.
Even in the company of these prison officers, the prisoner begs for alms from passer bys. As some showed compassion and concern, others ignore their plea. Speaking to some prisoners, they said that they have been in prison for 13 years and are waiting release. In addition, they feel happy whenever they leave the four corners of the prison.
Talking to some market women, they said that the exercise was good and beneficial. However, they decided to help because the work load was too much for 10 hands. Similarly, some on lookers and shop owners decided to lend a helping hand to the prisoners. They received help hence they completed half of the work by 1pm.
Speaking to the prison officer in charge, DDP Williams Thomas Anama, he shared his views. “We only encourage citizens to dispose of only liquid waste into the gutters. Rubbers, plastics and food particles only contribute to the dirt in the gutters”. He added that as these prisoners would be laid off in 2 months, he encouraged netizens to do better.
