#STOP GALAMSEY NOW

Government partners with Ghana Armed Forces and small-scale miners to intensify the fight against galamsey. Minister Fatimatu Abubakar affirms forest reserves and river bodies remain red zones.”

The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, announced that the government has finalized operational measures to intensify the ongoing fight against illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.” In a statement on Wednesday, October 9, she revealed that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) will lead the enhanced phase of “Operation Halt,” working closely with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana. The collaboration aims to drive illegal miners away from polluting the nation’s river bodies.

“We are not relenting in our efforts to protect our natural resources. The river bodies and forest reserves remain red zones,” said Fatimatu Abubakar.

Organised Labour has called on the government to repeal LI 2462, which allows gold prospecting in forest reserves, and has demanded an immediate ban on all forms of mining along river bodies. As a result, Organised Labour has declared an indefinite strike starting Thursday, October 10, over the government’s failure to meet their demands.

In a show of support, the Media Coalition Against Galamsey is urging all Ghanaians to wear red armbands as a form of protest. They stress the importance of government action to protect the environment and the nation’s future.
