The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, with the first case reported on October 4, 2024.
In a statement dated October 14, GHS revealed that as of October 11, nine cases had been confirmed across both Ada West and Ada East districts. Public health emergency management committees at district, regional, and national levels have been activated to contain the outbreak.
The Director-General of the GHS, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, announced the deployment of a joint multi-sectoral Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team (PHERRT). The team comprises representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ghana Education Service (GES), National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and Environmental Health Units from the affected districts.
GHS has issued alerts to all healthcare facilities nationwide, urging them to conduct contact tracing and follow-up actions. Additionally, healthcare workers in the affected areas have been trained on cholera case identification, sample management, and treatment protocols.
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the outbreak, while efforts are being intensified to prevent further spread.
