GES Unveils Harmonised Prospectus for Incoming SHS and Technical School Students

National Prospectus Standardises Requirements for Freshers

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced a harmonised “National Prospectus” to streamline the required items for all first-year students entering senior high and technical schools. This initiative ensures that schools adhere to uniform guidelines, eliminating the need for additional or unofficial requirements.

Parents Can Prepare Early for School Placement

With the new prospectus in place, parents can begin shopping for essential items even before the Computerised School Selection and Placement (CSSP) is announced. The national prospectus is divided into three categories, simplifying the shopping process by listing basic needs and cleaning materials separately.

Breakdown of the Prospectus Categories

  • Category A: Includes 27 basic items such as a trunk or chop box, bedding, toiletries, footwear, educational tools like a mathematical set and scientific calculator, and other essentials.
  • Category B: Focuses on cleaning materials divided into three sub-groups:
  • Group 1: Hard gloves, 5 litres of liquid soap, 1 kg washing powder.
  • Group 2: Small-size bleach, dustpan, long-handle broom, scrubbing brush.
  • Group 3: Standing mop and bucket, duster, short local broom.

Day students are expected to bring basic educational materials and footwear specific to their school’s guidelines, along with the appropriate cleaning items from their designated group.

Grouping System to Ease the Burden on Parents

Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the GES, explained that the grouping of cleaning materials prevents students from having to buy a long list of items. This method ensures that all necessary materials are covered while lightening the financial load on parents.

Guidance for Parents and Heads of Schools

Dr. Nkansah advised parents to purchase only the basic items initially and wait for their child’s group assignment before buying cleaning materials. He reassured parents of a smooth school placement process, noting that officers were ready to manage any challenges.

Eliminating Unnecessary Barriers to Enrollment

The harmonised prospectus aims to remove non-essential items from school requirements, ensuring that students are not delayed or denied enrollment due to unauthorized demands. Heads of schools are expected to follow the new guidelines strictly, with any concerns to be directed to GES officials.

Warning Against Extortion in the Placement Process

Dr. Nkansah cautioned individuals against charging parents for placement services, emphasizing that admission is free and any such illegal activity would be met with strict legal action. “We will not tolerate any misconduct in the placement process,” he stated firmly.

The GES assured parents that there are enough vacancies to accommodate all qualified candidates, easing concerns ahead of the placement announcement later this week.
