Gender Equality must apply in all sectors – Jennifer Essel, Child Education Officer in Awutu Senya East Municipality

The Child Education Officer at Awutu Senya East Municipality, Madam Jennifer Essel, has called for gender equality in all sectors in the country.

She believes that the youth and women especially, should be granted equal and fair opportunities as their male counterparts.

Speaking at the program dubbed “Sensitization Forum on Gender-Based Violence and Reproductive Health Right” at Kasoa yesterday, Madam Essel stated that women must be given the needed space in all educational and work sectors. She explained that gender equality can be feasible in the country if it is practiced in individual homes and communities.

She added that no one should suffer partiality on the basis of their gender. “With respect to our youth, children and women, gender equality must be spearheaded in all area. It shouldn’t be the case that women would be left behind in terms of education and positions at the workplace.”

She therefore entreated men to support and allow women to contribute their quota in whichever area they find themselves. Madam Jennifer was very optimistic that if men would realize the importance of women, the country will develop and grow in peace.

“Often times, we see men fight women over positions and opportunities. It is our suggestion that women be given the chance to do what men do so that Ghana will develop and everyone will have their peace of mind”.

Meanwhile, the National Director at the Department of Gender, Madam Comfort Asare, who graced the occasion, addressed issues of child-parent relationship. She explained that parents must show love and care to their children and also build positive communication channels for them.

“Most of us don’t engage our children to know the problems they may be facing. We must have family meetings and encourage them. This will help children open up to their parents about things their parents may not have any idea of”, she stressed.

She noted that parents should focus more on their children and cut down their working hours because “Majority of parents has failed in their duties. They focus more on money and apportion little time for their children. Some of them even fail to turn up for P.T.A. meetings.”

She advised parents and guardians to show more love and care to their children and stop molesting them.
