GAF Confirms Military Deployment to Parliament Was Requested by Speaker for Security Sweep

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has clarified that the deployment of soldiers to Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, was made at the request of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, to conduct routine security operations.

In a statement issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quarshie, GAF explained that the soldiers were present to assist with routine Canine and Bomb Sweeps of the Chamber, a standard procedure performed on the first sitting day of the week, typically Tuesdays. This practice is followed whenever Parliament convenes outside its usual location at the Parliament House, such as at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

The military emphasized that their presence was purely for security purposes and not to interfere with parliamentary proceedings. “Their role was exclusively to ensure the safety of the facility by checking for any explosive devices or harmful substances,” the statement read.

GAF refuted circulating reports alleging that the soldiers were deployed to influence or disrupt parliamentary activities, describing such claims as false and harmful to the military’s reputation. “These reports should be treated with the utmost contempt,” the statement stressed, urging media outlets to be responsible in their reporting.

The request for security assistance follows recent tensions in Parliament, including the Speaker’s pronouncement on the potential vacation of seats for four Members of Parliament, which has sparked intense public debate.

GAF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public safety and called on media organizations to avoid spreading misinformation.

For further coordination, the statement indicated that Parliament’s Deputy Marshals, Lt Col Samuel K. Ofosu (Rtd) and Wg Cdr Frederick Bawa (Rtd), can be contacted regarding the security arrangements.
