The Electoral Commission (EC) has raised alarms over the dangers of fake news and misinformation potentially disrupting Ghana’s upcoming December 7 general elections. The EC cautioned that unchecked spread of false information could erode public trust, incite tensions, and jeopardize the peaceful conduct of the polls.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, the EC’s Director of Training, highlighted the importance of verifying information before sharing it. In a media interview on Tuesday, November 12, he stressed that the EC is enhancing its communication strategies to provide accurate updates promptly, helping to prevent confusion.
“I fear misinformation may be our greatest challenge for Election 2024,” Dr. Quaicoo warned. “Traditional and social media sometimes prioritize speed over accuracy. We anticipate the spread of misleading content, potentially even unrelated videos labeled as election news.”
The EC encouraged voters to depend on verified sources for information and report any suspicious material, underscoring the need for vigilance to uphold the credibility of the election process.
