The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has raised alarm over Ghana’s growing energy sector debt, revealing that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is losing approximately $67 million in revenue each month.
According to ACEP, the company’s revenue collection rate stands at only 57 percent, leaving a significant gap that is adding to the country’s mounting debt. Kodzo Yaotse, ACEP’s Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy, stressed the urgent need for both the government and ECG to prioritize improving revenue recovery.
Failure to address this issue, he warned, will worsen the financial crisis for Independent Power Producers (IPPs), who are already burdened by unpaid debts.
