EC Urges First-Time Voters to Reject Inducements from Politicians

The Electoral Commission (EC) is urging first-time voters to avoid accepting money or gifts from politicians in exchange for their votes. Ho Municipal Electoral Officer, Emilia Akortia, issued the caution at an educational forum, warning that accepting such inducements could result in fines or jail terms.

The forum, held at the School of Hygiene in Ho, was part of “The Youth Voice: Activating First-Time Voters for Ghana’s 2024 General Election,” an initiative by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) and Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), supported by the US Embassy in Accra.

Miss Akortia also reminded attendees that voters who accept bribes could face a five-year voting ban under Ghana’s electoral laws. “Resist, reject, and report all acts of electoral corruption to the security agencies,” she urged.

Edmond Babatunde, a Civic Educator with the Volta Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), encouraged prospective voters to trust the ballot counting process, emphasizing that transparency and accuracy are essential for national integrity.

Samuel Harrison-Cudjoe, Programmes Officer at GACC, condemned the practice of forcing voters to swear by deities after taking money from candidates, calling it “criminal and evil.” He reminded attendees that voting is a right and responsibility that should remain independent of outside influence.

The engagement sought to equip first-time voters with knowledge to participate in a free, fair, and transparent election process, promoting peace, stability, and electoral integrity.
