The MTTD Police Commander at Elmina has allegedly assaulted and arrested the Chief Regent and 3 others. This was due to a land dispute.
Abusuapayin Kofi Aburam is the Chief Regent of Ekumfi Ebuakwa. He was assaulted and arrested because he had told the police officers to stop building on a particular land. He said this because the land did not belong to them and they had no approval.
The MTTD Police Commander, Superintendent Bansah Becham ordered 5 other policemen to brutalize and arrest the Chief Regent. Abusuapayin Aburam was insulted several times during his arrest.
The Chief’s secretary and younger sibling were also arrested. One more person was arrested and they were all sent to the Police Station. The arrest and assault took place without any investigation.
Eyewitness account confirmed the Chief was assaulted and arrested. One resident said she heard some noise and insults outside. She went out and saw the Police Commander assaulting the Chief.
Another eyewitness also recounted the same story. Most of them had no idea why this happened. They later realized that it was because of a land dispute. Many wondered why a Police Commander would attempt to build on a land which did not belong to him.
The Tufohene (Chief Advisor) of the area finally went to the Police Station and bailed them out. He said he had never met the Commander and did not know him.
The Police Commander considered the case to be a criminal one. He claimed that the land belonged to him and the chief had no right to halt his work. He also refused to speak to any media representative.
