CHEATING IN MARRIAGES

In the world we live today, some married couples often have extra marital affairs, that is cheating in marriages. These external marital affairs often lead to infertility after marriage. One threat to a happy marriage is infidelity including sex with someone other than a spouse.

A study done in the United States of America some years ago, found out that in 80 per cent of marriages, one or both partners had cheated. These partners cheat due to reasons such as lack of love, forced marriages, unattractive partners, and others. However, the question is what happened when they decided to get married?

Similarly, two years ago on a radio programme when this writer referred to the study in the USA. During the phone in session, a woman called and asserted that the 80 per cent figure was too low and could be as high as 99 per cent. The said individual was a woman who claims that men cheat more and that the ratio is 99:1 per every hundred couple.

Ghanaian women are known to be the most faithful in the world. These women are now matching their men bumper to bumper. In Nigeria 95 per cent of Nigerian husbands have side chicks. Today some studies suggest 80 per cent of husbands and 65 per cent of wives in Ghana are victims of infidelity. The problem cuts across age, profession, tribe, academic qualification and faith.

WHY CHEAT?

Many believe that it is just human nature. A man is attracted to a woman and a woman attracted to a man. This does not go away because you are married. Men find women who are not their spouses attractive. Similarly women find men who are not their spouse attractive. The fact that you find the partner less attractive after marriage is very disheartening.

Others are also of the view that humans are naturally selfish. People just like to keep for themselves their partners and have others too. Couples are selfish with their partners yet they want others for themselves. What about those who do not have partners? The heart of man is just full of wickedness that is those who cheat.

Additionally, probably just for emotional needs. Marriage revolves on needs, sex, romance, respect, care, love, support amongst others. In instances where one spouse does not get these, it is likely that they would cheat. For example if a woman does not respect her man she breaks him. He tries to bounce back by by taking a woman he can control that leads to cheating in marriages.
