Catholic Archdiocese of Accra Leads Protest Walk Against Galamsey Today

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Catholic Lay Faithful, and Professionals, will hold an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey today, Friday, October 10. This demonstration seeks to raise awareness of the destructive impact of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and calls for urgent government intervention.

The protest aims to push for a state of emergency on mining activities, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like water bodies, river buffers, and forest reserves. Organisers hope to compel the government to implement stricter measures to halt the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and promote sustainable development for future generations.

Starting at 10:00 AM from the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka, participants will walk through key areas of Accra, including Castle Road, Ridge Roundabout, Parliament House, and Oxford Street, before concluding at Christ the King Parish in Cantonments. A petition will also be presented to President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House, urging swift government action.

The Catholic Church is inviting all Ghanaians—regardless of religious or social affiliations—to join this peaceful protest. Organisers stressed that the event is both a prayer for change and a demand for immediate action to safeguard the environment and restore Ghana’s ecosystems.
