Benzema consoled by teammates after Euro 2016 snub

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was welcomed back to training by his teammates after receiving the news he will not be selected for France at this summer’s European Championships.

Benzema, who has scored 27 goals in 81 games for Les Bleus, has been at the centre of a blackmail scandal involving Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena, and it has been decided he will not feature in the tournament in order to keep harmony in the squad.

With or without him, France will stand a good chance of success as hosts, but their loss could be Los Blancos’ gain and the Real players were there to support him on Thursday.

The striker never hid his desire to be selected by coach Didier Deschamps, and will undoubtedly be disappointed as he faces up to the prospect of a supporting role.

His fellow countryman, and club boss, Zinedine Zidane, has stood by him throughout the ordeal, with a special relationship maintained between the pair.

After his arrival at the Valdebebas training complex and the show of support from his teammates, Benzema put the same effort and desire as usual into the session as he prepared for the trip to Getafe on Saturday.
