Manchester United have missed out on Portuguese sensation Renato Sanches, with the Benfica starlet having agreed a €35million move to Bayern Munich.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise at the Stadium of Light this term, and is set for a place in the Portugal squad this summer.
Sanches scored against Bayern in the Champions League quarter-final back in April and now Die Roten have made him their first signing of the summer.
This has been the youngsters first campaign in Benfica’s senior ranks, with Sanches only making his senior bow in October.
The Eagles quickly tied him down to a new contract until 2021, with his new deal featuring a €45million release clause and Sanches’ all-action style has since made him a mainstay in Rui Vitoria’s midfield.
“We are delighted to have signed him, said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
“He is a dynamic, two-footed, combative and technically gifted midfielder who will strengthen our team further. ”
Manchester United have been virtual ever-presents in the Portuguese capital watching Sanches this term.
But Bayern, having been impressed by the maturity of his display at the Allianz Arena in the first leg of the Champions League last eight, have kept a watching brief.
And now they’ve swooped with a £27.5million initial deal.
Mats Hummels is expected to be next through the doors at Sabener Strasse, with the Borussia Dortmund skipper set on a move back to Bayern after eight years away.
The German international is keen to return to Munich.
