Antwi-Danso Criticizes U.S. Visa Restrictions Policy Targeting Democracy in Ghana

The Dean of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Prof. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, has raised concerns over the U.S. Department of State’s new visa policy, which restricts visas for individuals undermining democracy in Ghana.

While the U.S. clarified that the policy targets specific individuals and not the broader Ghanaian public or government, Prof. Antwi-Danso, speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on October 28, questioned the U.S.’s authority to define Ghana’s democratic framework.

“Why should the U.S. be the ones to determine how democracy should be formulated?” he asked, emphasizing that Ghana and other countries should develop their own democratic paths rather than depend on external models.

He cautioned against foreign interference, citing Venezuela as an example of a nation destabilized by external influences after unfavorable election outcomes.

In contrast, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) welcomed the policy, viewing it as a positive move to hold politicians accountable and promote moderation in political actions. The foundation also called on other Western nations to adopt similar policies.
