Agogo residents to chase out Fulanis in demo today

Residents of Agogo in the Ashanti Region are set for another demonstration today [Tuesday], to protest against the continuous destruction of their farms and harassment by nomadic Fulani herdsmen.

The residents say the herdsmen were ordered to vacate the community with their cattle but have refused to heed to the directive, hence their decision to protest.

Speaking to Citi News, Spokesperson for the residents, Kingsley Obeng, said the activities of Fulani herdsmen have not ceased, adding that the herdsmen are still preventing residents from visiting their farms.

“These Fulani herdsmen have been here for sometime now and they have been causing a lot of damages to our crops, water bodies and killing many people… So the court ordered them two years ago to vacate the area, but they are still there. The IGP came here this year and told us that he will try and drive them away from this land but they are still here. Traditional Council also organized a press conference and asked them to leave by they are still here so we want the whole world to hear our plea and that is why we are protesting. They are rearing cattle here and destroying our water bodies so we want them to leave. ”

He indicated that the Police have also given the residents the clearance to hold the demonstration.

The intended demonstration comes months after the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North Constituency, led a demonstration against the Agogo traditional authorities for what he calls, their failure to sack Fulani herdsmen in the area.

The protracted conflict with the herdsmen has claimed several lives and property within the Agogo Township and other parts of the country.

About two months ago, a combined team of Police and Military personnel were deployed to the area by the Ashanti Regional Security Council to flush out the herdsmen but the move yielded no result.
