Afenyo-Markin Announces Move to Recall Parliament Amid Political Tensions

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leader of the NPP MPs in Parliament, has disclosed plans to trigger a recall of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s indefinite adjournment of sittings.

In an interview with Citi FM on October 22, the Effutu MP criticized the Speaker’s decision, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using the adjournment to obstruct parliamentary business. Afenyo-Markin argued that the NDC’s actions are designed to disrupt key government operations and hinder the progress of crucial legislation aimed at stabilizing Ghana’s economy.

He stressed the importance of resuming parliamentary sessions to pass essential bills and address pressing national matters, warning that further delays could jeopardize economic recovery efforts.

“The indefinite adjournment risks stalling critical economic interventions,” Afenyo-Markin said, adding that the NPP will not allow opposition tactics to derail the government’s plans.

Despite the current tensions, he reassured Ghanaians that the NPP is committed to ensuring the smooth operation of Parliament.

“God willing, tomorrow [October 23], the Majority will trigger the recall of Parliament because the actions of the Speaker are undermining parliamentary work. We will see what he [Bagbin] will do,” he stated.

He further emphasized that the Speaker’s refusal to act on a court directive adds to the challenges, saying, “A court has ordered you to take action, and you are going around the issue. He is not Parliament, and so we will trigger a recall.”

Afenyo-Markin urged unity within the legislative body, stressing the need for Parliament to fulfill its duties and support government policies aimed at addressing Ghana’s economic challenges.
