Disgraced Adam Johnson was visited in prison today by his former girlfriend Stacey Flounders eight days after he was sentenced for child sex offences.
The former Premier League footballer was jailed for six years for grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan.
Today he was paid a visit by Stacey, sister Faye, 23, and his dad David, 55, at Armley prison in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
They spent just over an hour seeing the shamed sportsman, who has been placed on suicide watch since his imprisonment.
The visit comes as it was revealed Johnson, 28, had begged Stacey, 26, to bring their daughter to visit him.
But today Stacey came without the child as she and his family members looked downcast on the way into the prison.
Earlier this week the disgraced footballer told pals how seeing one-year-old Ayla is the only thing keeping him going.
He has undergone mental health assessments since his conviction and is now claiming seeing his daughter is the ‘only way’ he’ll survive.
A friend told the Daily Star: “Even before he went inside he had begged Stacey that he wants to see her.
“He has now called her and said he needs a visit and to see his daughter because of the grimness of prison life.
He told her it’s the only way he’ll be able to survive the sentence and will give him hope during his appeal.”
This comes as Johnson’s sister Faye revealed he will be appealing his conviction and sentence.
She made the claims on the Facebook page set up in support of her convicted brother.
Writing on her Facebook campaign page, she said: “Appeal Against Conviction lodged! Appeal Against Sentence is imminent this week!”
His ex-girlfriend Stacey Flounders previously posted a photo of the pair together on Instagram with the message: “I feel like I’ve lost my best friend.”
In the picture Stacey is shown smiling and wearing a red dress and has her arm around Johnson.
She wrote: “I’m not even mad anymore at what happened in the past, I’m sad that it feels like I have lost my best friend.”
This comes as Johnson has been placed on suicide watch and will be assessed by mental health professionals.
It means a guard will check on the ex-Sunderland and England player every 15 minutes in his first week at Armley Prison, Leeds.
His bed’s safety sheets cannot be torn up to make ligatures and warders must log his words and any unusual behaviour.
It is also feared he will be singled out for reprisals during his six-year jail term for sexual activity with a girl fan, 15 – and be forced to use some of his fortune to buy protection.
A source said: “He will be watched for a few nights. Jail bosses won’t take any risk of him harming himself – and he could also become a target.”
The pervert, 28, may be moved away from cramped Armley to top-security Frankland Prison, Co Durham, while another long-term jail is assigned.
Ex-Frankland lag Jermaine James said: “As a sex offender, Johnson will get a lot of hatred inside and may have to pay criminals to protect him.”
Double murderer Ian Huntley, 42, had his throat cut at the jail in 2010.
