zidane looks to end Clásico curse

No Real Madrid coach, since Bernd Schuster in 2007, has won their first Clásico.

Barcelona have spent the past nine years ruining any new Real Madrid boss’s first ever Clásico game. Since Bernd Schuster’s 1-0 win at the Camp Nou on 23rd December 2007, just six months after taking over in the club’s dugout, none of his successors have managed to win their first clash with the Catalans. Juande Ramos, Manuel Pellegrini, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benítez all lost their first Clásico, some of them badly.

Now it is Zinedine Zidane’s turn to end the club’s curse and he does not lack motivation for the task at hand. The Frenchman has prepared his squad well. He knows that a win at the Camp Nou will be worth its weight in gold to a team in desperate need of a confidence boost. Whatever happens, the league title is out of Real Madrid’s reach, but the morale gained from an away win over their eternal rival would be invaluable in their quest to win this year’s Champions League
