WOMEN BUSTED FOR SELLING COLOURED ORANGES

The Ghana FOOD and Drugs Authorities(FDA) is said to have made an arrest of two women suspected to be involved in coloring oranges with artificial additives following a “caught in the act” video which went viral last Wednesday.

According to the FDA, the police conducted a thorough search at the Madina market after the said videos and pictures went viral on social media.

In this video a woman is seen with two big bowls; one containing the colouring solution and the other full of oranges. She then dips the oranges into the colouring solution for some minutes to turn glowing yellow.

This act is believed to made the fruit more appealing to the eye and to attract ready customers for their sellers.

Food and Drugs Authorities however see this act as unacceptable since the health of individuals are concern who might fall victim to  this deliberate ploy.  Therefore describing this as ‘suspicious’ and hence condemned the practice leading to the arrest of the two persons for questioning and possible persecution.

The FDA faces a numerous challenges in regulating Ghana’s food and drugs market. The authorities has seized huge tons of expired goods ahead of the Easter celebration last April. The items included antibiotics and analgesics, baby foods such as Aptamil, cerelac, biscuits among other goods from shops, supermarkets, filling station marts and the markets as well.
