“IT WILL BE BETTER TO MAKE TECHNICAL EDUCATION FREE THAN FREE SHS”- ARTISANS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA.

The Artisans Association of Ghana have raised concerns that it will be better to make technical education free rather than free Senior High School.According to them much attention should be given to the technical and vocational education.

Artisans Association of Ghana (AAG) is a social enterprise that enables sustainable livelihoods for men, women and youth in the informal sector through skill training, upgrading and job matching in the construction industry. The construction industry has increasingly become important and core to the nation’s economy. The Association currently operates in Greater Accra, Volta region, Western Region, and Ashanti Region with a goal to expand nationwide. The association trains in demand driven trade skills such as Masonry, Electricals, plumbing, Steel Bending, Welding, Tiling, Landscaping, etc.

Speaking to an Educationist,Daniel Oppong to confront the concerns by the association,he mentioned that, in Ghana technical schools are not much regarded as compared to other educational fields hence they is little or no likeness by students especially to specialize in the technical and vocational field.

He added that technical and vocational education equips you with technical and practical know-how to confront challenges in the society. It also promote entrepreneurship since people can be able to establish themselves by creating jobs as a means of livelihood. He explained that you don’t  need to depend on anyone financially since you have the practical or technical ability to establish yourself on your own and create job opportunities for people.

He however pointed out to the association that the free Senior High School initiative is not limited since it cuts across all fields of education be it technical or vocational.

He then urged government to revive these technical and vocational areas by sensitizing, advising and orienting students  to specialize in the technical and vocational sectors to erase their ill perceptions since it contribute greatly to the economy and boost productivity.
