Brazil legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento who is popularly known as Pele in a tweet commended Kylian Mbappe following his 65th minute strike in the 2018 FIFA World cup final against Croatia.
The 19-year-old French attacker scored Les Bleus’ fourth and final goal in their 4-2 victory in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium, making him the only second teenager to score in a world cup final after Brazil’s Pele.
Three-time world cup winner (1958, 1962, and 1970) Pele, who scored twice as an 18-year-old in Brazil’s 5-2 victory over Sweden in the 1958 World Cup final took to his personal twitter account to praise the youngster for writing his name in the history books of the FIFA World cup.
“Only the second teenager to have scored a goal in a #WorldCupFinal!” Welcome to the club, @KMbappe – it’s great to have some company!” he tweeted.
Pele again humorously wrote, “If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may have to dust my boots off again…”
With four goals at the tournament, The Paris Saint-Germain attacker had an incredible world cup clinching the FIFA Young Player of the Tournament award as his contribution did not go unnoticed.
Two decades down the line, the Frenchs have won their second FIFA world cup trophy after their last victory over Brazil when they hosted it in 1998.
However, the Adidas Golden ball award for the overall best player of the tournament was presented to Real Madrid star and Croatia’s captain Luka Modric.
