VOLTA REGION IS THE HEART OF CHILD TRAFFICKING IN GHANA- US AMBASSADOR.

US Ambassador, Robert P Jackson the head of US diplomatic mission in Ghana says the Volta region is the hub of child trafficking  due to the number of children sent to the lake everyday to work.

According to Ambassador Jackson, he went for a three days trip to the Volta Region where he met and interacted with the the trafficked victims.

He said, “so many children are trafficked to the lake. We met with some of the children and parents and relatives and people working to combat trafficking during our visit there and their stories are powerful and heart-wrenching”.

Thirty victims of human trafficking forced to work on the Volta lake were rescued by police in April, 2017. The victims who ranged from 16 to 17 years of age, were transferred to the Social Welfare Department to be taken care of.

There were trace of physical abuse and signs of broken bones on the children that were rescued , Ambassador Jackson told a group of magistrates at the West Africa Regional Training Center in Accra on Wednesday.

He further lamented that, if Ghana does not take responsibility of the problem an amount of $500million’s worth will be lost from the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC).
