Usain Bolt could miss the Olympics

Usain Bolt could miss this summer’s Olympics after pulling out of Jamaican trials with a hamstring injury.

The biggest star in world athletics could miss this summer’s Games in Rio de Janeiro with the hamstring tear, which forced him out of Friday’s 100m final just minutes before the starting gun.

Bolt took to Twitter moments after astonishing the crowd in Kingston by not lining up on the track, posting two pictures of his right thigh being treated by a physio.

The sprinter – who set both the 100m and 200m world records – captioned them: ‘Starting the recovery process right away.’

Bolt does not automatically miss the Olympics because of missing the national trials.

He has applied for a medical exemption – which he is likely to be granted – and would be allowed to set a qualifying time at a meet in London in three weeks.

That leaves Bolt little time to recover from a Grade 1 hamstring tear – the most mild of its kind.

He said he started feeling a discomfort in his right thigh during the quarter final heat on Thursday evening, however he appeared to be fine during the semi final – which he won despite a poor start.

The first the crowd knew of Bolt not taking part was when the seven other finalists lined up on the track without him.

‘I have submitted a medical exemption to be excused from the 100m final and the remainder of the National Championships,’ Bolt said.

‘I will seek treatment immediately and hope to show fitness at the London Anniversary Games on July 22 to earn selection for the Olympic Games in Rio.’
