TV License Fee is Unconstitutional- Abronye DC

The Regional Youth Organizer of the Ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, known in political circles as ‘Abronye DC has lambasted his own government for implementing the TV License calling it unconstitutional sharia law.

In an interview morning show host of  Okay Fm, Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie, he explained that TV license fee was instituted in 1966 during a military regime of which GTV was only 2 years old.

According to Abronye, after that regime, Ghana has had 3 constitutions which are the 1969,1979 and the current one is the 1992 constitution.

“If we want to see if it is constitutional, we must find out what the 1992 constitution is saying about the mass media. The constitution says every Ghanaian has the right to enjoy the freedom of the mass media. Therefore arresting people for not paying TV license is unconstitutional” he explained.

He then called on the judiciary to wake up and instead of prosecuting people, explain what the stand of the law on the issue at hand.

“The 1992 constitution is higher than every law in the country so you can not take away the right given to me by the 1992 constitution a Legislature Instrument,” he said.

He finally made it clear that they will not allow this sharia law in the country because when the Ex-President John Mahama’s led government was trying to make it a law, the NPP stood against is and why must they,  who said it was wrong in opposition say it is now right when they are in power.
