Member of Parliament for Assin Central constituency, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong claims that the very people that have enjoyed free education are the ones that are condemning it.
Mr Ohene Agyapong disclosed this in an interview with Pink FM’S morning show host Kofi Asamoah Aning in relation to comments made by Mr Alban Bagbin on the free SHS program.
Mr. Alban Bagbin, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearship aspirant on a sister station stated “I don’t’ even understand it, I’m just like some of the stakeholders, we have heard of the double track system and that is being implemented in other countries in Africa”.
He added that the free SHS program would not survive in the next three years.
According to the MP for Assin Central, it is interesting to find out that the beneficiaries of free SHS are now rallying against it, most especially Mr Bagbin who aspires to be a president of this republic.
Ghanaians should be given equal opportunities. Citizens can work on their tertiary institutions or set up businesses once the president has decided to give the citizenry free SHS as the minimal level of education.
Mr Agyapong claims that he is confident that the program would survive in the next three years as Mr Bagbin stated that it would not survive.
A visionary leader thinks ahead and knows that there is no perfect system in the world. It is a bold step that one takes and solves the challenges along the line as they revolve.
‘People have embraced free SHS and therefore the intake has gone up.’ The shift in the class activities is not a new thing. It happened even in my time as student where we use to run the morning and afternoon sessions. He asserted.
The Legislator emphasized that there is nothing wrong with other students occupying classrooms for academic purpose when the first batch are on vacation.
The only cost that would come as result would be incentives for the teachers. Either their salary would be doubled or more teachers would be appointed to ease the work load.
This he disclosed that the government is ready to bear the cost, because education is the key to success of the nation’s development.
The only way that the free SHS program would not work is when criticism like that of Bagbin’s is adhered to.
There is no guarantee that students whose fees can be paid by their guardians have brighter futures. There are other students who can be become good citizens if given the opportunity. Mr Agyapong stated.
‘Anybody who speaks against free SHS is a traitor to the nation, such speeches of Mr Bagbin would determine whether he can lead the country as he contest Mr John Dramani Mahama in the NDC flag bearer ship contest.’ Kennedy reiterated.
In the United States of America, there are equal opportunities given to the blacks to have access to renowned tertiary institutions and that is similar to the free SHS program.
Students who would have wandered around after basic education because of lack of funds now have the opportunity to have access to second cycle institutions. The Legislator indicated.
Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong averred that the free SHS program is going to boost the economy of the nation as a lot of human resource would be released as the students complete.
