Serena Williams survives scare to beat Christina McHale in three sets to keep record Wimbledon bid on track

Is there anything less serene than Serena Williams scorned? Is there anything quite as dangerous?

Christina McHale and a cameraman now know the answers, having watched the grand old queen of tennis smash a racket in an almighty tantrum and then use its replacement to avoid a tremendous upset at Wimbledon.

What a near miss it was for McHale, the world No 65. What a wonderful second-round result this might have been for one of America’s lesser known lights against its brightest.
