SAVE THE KALAKPA RESOURCE RESERVE FROM ILLEGAL LOGGING….GWS TO GOVERNMENT

The Ghana Wildlife Society (G.W.S) observes with disappointment the wanton illegality occurring in the Kalakpa Resource Reserve. The reserve is located in the Volta Region of Ghana which is gradually turning into a logging hub.

The reserve was designated into a wildlife protected area in 1975. That pursuant to the Wildlife Reserves (Amendment) Regulations (L.I. 1022). It’s home to over 270 species of birds,buffaloes,river-hogs and monkeys. Kapakpa attracts thousands of tourists annually.

Speaking at a press conference today, Mr. Faisal Elias , Policy and Advocacy Officer, G.W.S. commended the Ministry of Lands. For placing a ban on the harvesting and trade of rosewood. He urged all stakeholders of the Forestry Commission to ensure the ban is made to hold this time.

Mr. Elias tasked the Forestry Commission to improve its monitoring and surveillance of the protected areas. Also the plant and animal species in them. Community participation is key in forest management.

He said the communities and people within the Kalakpa landscape are very much interested in the protection of the reserve. Their involvement in the management of the reserve must be strengthen to increase its protection.

He therefore called on Government of Ghana to hasten the passage of the Wildlife Resource Management Bill into law to give legal impetus to community participation in forest management.

The Director of Kalakpa Club, Horlali Haligah appealed to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to hold his Ministry. And hold relevant senior officials responsible for the failures at Kalakpa. Institute measures to solve the problems there.

He also implored the Volta Regional Minister and the Volta regional Security Council to as a matter of urgency carry out an in-depth independent investigation into this recent logging scandal and bring the ringleaders to justice.
