PNC CHAIRMAN TO RELINQUISH POSITION FOR MERGER?

The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has pledged to readily surrender his chairmanship for the greater unification of the Nkrumahist parties.

According to the PNC chairman, the amalgamation of smaller parties has worked in countries like Zambia, Kenya and recently the Gambia, hence the need for smaller parties in Ghana to provide a united front to end the dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) recently announced its readiness to merge with other smaller political parties to form an effective third political force in the country.

Several attempts by factions within the Nkrumaist front to emerge over the years have failed. The Convention People’s Party and PNC for instance failed to merge in the run-up to the 2016 general election. However, Mr. Mornah attributed the inability of the smaller parties to merge over the years to the “egos” of the leaders of these parties.

It is about the personality who should lead the party and who should not and I think we have to deal with that if we want to come together.

I think we are serious about mobilising like-minded people so that we have a united front,” he said.

He assured: “I will do everything possible to support including relinquishing my chairmanship position to get the merger come the reality.”

Ironically, Mr. Bornah’s views differ from that of his contemporary, the PNC’s 2016 flagbearer, Dr. Edward Mahama, who said he did not trust either the PPP or other smaller parties to agree on a merger.

Dr. Mahama explained that many perceived smaller parties after every general election sought mergers, but arragements to actualise these talks keep failing. He further discounted any posibility of the PNC merging with the PPP based on the differences in their ideologies.

The PPP said they are not Nkrumaists, we are Nkrumaists, so what kind of relationship do they want with us? It is true that he (Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom) is not an Nkrumaist, he left the CPP, so if PPP wants unity, they should re-enter CPP: PNC and CPP can have that relationship because we are both Nkrumaists,” he stated. – radiogold905.com
