PARLIAMENT SUSPENDS SITTING IN MEMORY OF THE LATE J.H MENSAH

 

Parliament on Friday suspends sitting in memory of Mr. Joseph Henry Mensah, who went the way of the flesh on Thursday, July 12, 2018.

He was a great leader and an important personality in parliament.

Reporting from the Parliament House, Pink FM’s Parliamentary Correspondent, Prince Kwabena Okatakyie Acquah stated that, the minority leader in Parliament, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, suggested, Ghanaians should set a memorial day for the deceased, because the nation have really lost a very great personality.

According to Okatakyie, most parliamentarians including Hon. Inusah Fuseini, Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Hon. Rashid Kpakpo poured out their agonies over the death of the late J.H Mensah and described him as someone who is brilliant, vigilant and very knowledgeable.

The Parliamentary Correspondent who doubles as a Morning Show Producer, further reported that, the speaker of parliament requested for a one minute silence in memory of the late J.H Mensah and for that matter, sitting had to be suspended.

In spite of this, the speaker together with the delegation,  proceeded to the residence of the deceased to share their condolences to the bereaved family. They all expressed their grievances and how painful they feel to have lost such a mentor. They said they have no choice because death is inevitable. Okatakyie concluded.

BACKGROUND

Veteran Politician and NPP stalwart, Joseph Henry Mensah died at the age of 89.

J.H Mensah, ‘’a Gold Coaster’’ born in October 1928, is a founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party and served in three different ministerial positions under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration.

He was a former Minority leader and a Majority leader. He held his last top government position in 2005 when he was appointed Senior Minister by President Kufuor.

His working experience dates back to 1953 when he was appointed as an Assistant Inspector of Taxes by the colonial administration.

The Senior Minister of Government Business also worked as a Research Fellow in Economics at the University of Ghana between 1954 and 1958. He joined the United Nations Secretariat in 1958 as an Economic Affairs Officer at the Centre for Development Planning, Projections and Policies in New York.

In 1961, Mr. Mensah was the Head of Agency at the National Planning commission of the Government of Ghana, which drew and implemented the country’s Seven-Year Development Plan(1962-1969).

During the Progress Party (PP) administration (1969-1972), he was the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning as well as a Member of Parliament (MP).

From 1974 till his demise, Mr. Mensah has worked in different capacities both at home and abroad. These include Chairman, Development and Managing Director for Development and Management Consultants (Ghana) Ltd. He also acted as Chairman for Sunyani District Council (1978-1981), and proprietor of Banka Farms Limited.
