PARENT CHILD BULLYING: A GLOBAL PLIGHT WHICH NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

Parent-child bullying can be defined as any behavior from one or both parents that is regularly overbearing upon the right or wishes of their children. When people hear the term bully, the idea that comes to mind is that one or more adolescents picking on other children, that is, as bullies, but the reality is that, most young children adopt their bullying behavior traits from one or both of their parents.

The problem of child bullying is widespread in developing countries and Ghana is not an exception. Despite the effort of the government to stop this, there is still no improvement that can be seen. Study has indicated that over five thousand (5,000) parents and kids are involved in this act.

The data includes interviews done with parents who maltreat or mistreat their kids and reports from kids about their experience concerning bullying.

Children who go through bullying become traumatic both emotionally and academically. Most child bullying cases happen in the high schools. Also, parents who are noted to have experienced depression in turn, bully their kids. Most times, children who are not living with their biological parents go through bullying.

Despite the forms of bullying, what to be discussed is parent-child bullying. Parent-child bullying exist and it can cause real problems in the children’s lives. Depending on the age of the child, parents can display bullying behaviours ranging from excess corporal punishment on a toddler to physical attack on older children. The parents involve the kids in physical, emotional or mental bullying.

Fathers go to the extent of even intimidating their female kids by harassing them sexually.

There can be physical bully, emotional or mental discomfort and that of cyber bullying which is, saying mean things to someone online. It is significant to know and understand that bullying go beyond physical intimidation.

Parents who make their children go through emotional bullying do not realize it themselves that they are bullying them. Most parents think that they are rather sharing their feeling or piece of mind with the kids. That kind of bullying is known as emotional or mental bullying.

Edward Yomade, six years old, who became a victim of parent-child bully, suffered psychological trauma that led to poor performance in class.

It was alleged that, Edward has suffered from this act for a very long time until his class teacher got to know.

Children in the world have the right to be protected against all types of bully. All the bullying that they go through is noted to be domestic violence.

According to the children’s Act, 1998, Act 87, as well as domestic violence Act 732, children are to be prohibited from violence. This act is to protect children from all kinds of violence which they through.

Over sixty years of independence, Ghana need to step up to stop parent-child bully. The government needs anti-labour or violence monitors to check from time to time for the concern of children’s future.
