One Constituency, One Ambulance: Paramedics and Drivers not trained based on party affiliations

Minister of special development Initiatives, Hawa Koomson has dispelled claims that government is training drivers who will handle the new ambulances based on their party affiliation.

She was speaking in an interview with Pink FM’s Morningshow host, Akwasi Addo.

According to the minister about 600 personnel are been trained to serve as drivers for the new vehicles which according to her will begin serving ambulance purposes January next year.

She sighted the training as one of the reasons that has delayed the distribution of the ambulances to the various constituencies.

She counted also on the need to have personnel who are properly trained to handle the new set of vehicles since they require special knowledge to handle.

“The vehicles are of new specs which require special training before one could handle them. We are taking our time to train the drivers to prevent any mishandling that could result to unwarranted breakdowns. These vehicles are of new specs” she mentioned.

According to the minister, the drivers are also been formalized to ensure that they would be able to drive patients safely and in a more professional manner to the various hospitals without casualties.

Whilst special workshops are been built, the minister added also that tracking devices are been installed in the vehicles with about 600 paramedics also undergoing training.

The paramedics will be working in the various ambulances.

The ministry of Special Development Initiatives this year began a project to see each constituency in Ghana have an ambulance.

A set of the vehicles have arrived in the country and currently parked at the forecourt of the State House. Several Ghanaians including some legislators have raised questions about why the vehicles have not been distributed to serve the purpose based on which they were provided as many are of the view that government is keeping them until next year for political aesthetics, something the minister has shrugged off entirely.
