I AM NOT SELFISH- LUCKY MENSAH

Highlife artiste, Lucky Mensah has debunked assertions that he is “greedy and selfish” after he released a song to endorse the candidature of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo.

According to some of his critics including musician, Mzbel, Lucky Mensah switched political camps to satisfy his “selfish demands” which the NDC couldn’t meet.

And that he forms part of a section of greedy musicians who go to all the political parties expecting to give their endorsement to the highest bidder and when it fails, they turn round to say things that are not true.

But in an interview with the Showbiz on Monday, Lucky vehemently denied that “selfish tag” and said he was fighting for the “good of the generation”.

“What is selfish about changing my mind about something I initially believed in and supported wholeheartedly? I think we must face the reality and say it as it is than cover it just for political favours from those in high places.

“The NPP didn’t know I had composed a song for them and no one from the party contracted me to do this. If that happened and I was paid for it, then one can say I’m greedy or selfish but I did this on my own volution because I can feel the hardship the Mahama led NDC administration has subjected Ghanaians to,” he defended.

The artiste who presented his endorsement songs, Yere Sesamu and Nana B3ba to Nana Akufo Addo last week Thursday narrated how his love and support for the NDC dwindled over the years.

He told Showbiz after being disappointed with the governance of the NPP, he supported the NDC with the hope that things would get better under their tenure.

However, after four years, he was disappointed but continued to support the party and even endorsed the candidature of John Mahama in 2012 when he has earlier expressed his disappointment with the Atta Mills government in his Nkratuo song.

But fast forward to 2016, he said he has compared the two governments and come to the realisation that though he was a staunch NDC supporter, he had to rescind the decision this election year because “I have tasted water and wine and I know that for the eight years both parties were in power, the NPP performed better than the NDC.

“Were we not in this country when in 2008, Atta Mills promised to reduce the price of fuel drastically, did he achieve that? For the last four years, many businesses have collapsed because of ‘Dumsor’ and all the NDC government keep giving us are promises while the problems persist.

“ For how long can I pretend that all is well when a party I sacrificed my career for has woefully failed? If this is the reason why I am being branded selfish and greedy, then I’m sorry.

“ I will fight for my generation because when there’s change of government and things get better, I will also benefit as a citizen of the country,” he defended his position.
