Nick Blackwell retires

Nick Blackwell has announced his retirement from boxing after sustaining serious injuries against Chris Eubank Jr. in their British middleweight title fight last month.

It was a fight of epic proportions and one that left Blackwell in an induced coma with bleeding in his brain.

Chris Eubank Sr. had noted the severity of the injuries that his son had inflicted on his opponent before the fight had finished, telling Eubank Jr. to only hit to Blackwell’s body.

The advice could well have saved Blackwell’s life and after winning his biggest battle, the 25-year-old has decided to call it a day.

“No that’s me done,” he tweeted after being asked on the social media site if he would be making a comeback.

“I can’t put my friends, family and myself through that again – but I’ll still be involved.”

Blackwell, a former British middleweight champion, told Eubank Jr. that he held no grudges after he collapsed in the ring.

The fight was finally ended in the 10th round because of swelling over his left eye.

A hospital stay was inevitable and once Blackwell had emerged from his coma, he posted a message of thanks for the support he had received, leading Eubank Jr. to ask after his well-being on Twitter.

Blackwell replied saying, “No hard feelings, we were both there doing a job and it was unfortunate for what happened but I hope your OK champ.”
