The leading opposition party, the National Democratic Party (NDC) also the minority has expressed the nomination of Mrs. Jean Mensa by the President on July 23, 2018 as ‘shocking’.
In a press statement released after Mrs. Mensa was nominated by the President as the new chairperson of the electoral commission, the NDC has described the appointment as shocking since the President gave assurance to the nation that, the person appointed in the commission would be persons whose integrity and political neutrality would be above board.
According to the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia on behalf of the party, he claims that, for the president to go contrary to his earlier assurance to the nation, there is, thus, the defying of all senses of decency, fairness and justice and as a result leads to a great amount of gross discretionary powers of appointment vested in him by the constitution of the republic of the country.
The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare on Monday announced that President Akufo-Addo had nominated Mrs Jean Mensa, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), as the new Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.
Mrs. Jean Mensa is the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Ghana’s premier public policy institute and Coordinator of the Ghana Political Parties Programme. She is a lawyer by profession and a leader of thought in Ghana on governance and democratic issues. Mrs. Mensa has carved a niche for herself in the field of policy research and advocacy as well as in the development of policy alternatives. Mrs. Mensa was a tireless advocate for the review of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and served as a Commissioner of the Government-established Constitution Review Commission.
