Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central has been prosecuted for allegedly using public office for private benefits. He was also accused of evading taxes by the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Martin Amidu.
Mr. Ayariga has challenged the capacity of the Special Prosecutor to prosecute him. According to the MP, he is clean from all the charges leveled against him by the special Prosecutor.
Lawyer Godwin Edudzie Tamakloe, counsel for Mr. Mahama Ayariga advised the general public to analyze this issue of public interest before making any conclusion. To him, Ghanaians are quick to judge and thus there is the need for them to be very circumspect in their judgments.
Mr. Tamakloe argued also that there have been several instances where parliament had passed laws and later the laws have been rejected by the supreme court. Hence, the Mahama-Amidu case is an example of such instance.
Furthermore, he urges Ghanaians to be the ultimate judges of the suite leveled against his client, Honorable Mahama Ayariga.
Background:
This is the first case the office of the Special Prosecutor is pursuing in court since its formation.
Mahama Ayariga is allegedly accused of evading customs duties and taxes as well as abusing his office as a public officer for his private benefits.
