PANSEXUALITY: THERE IS MORE THAN JUST BEING STRAIGHT

Gays, lesbians, transsexuals, bisexuals, heterosexuals…the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, the majority barely accepts the fact that there are more types of love than just being straight or homosexual. Through the outings of people all around the world, tolerance, and acceptance (might) increase.

After Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monáe is one of those. She is politically dedicated to the #MeToo movement and one of the greatest voices in “Black Live matters” demonstrations. Her recent admission of identifying with pansexual persons encourages people to widen their horizon and speak up. The American singer-songwriter was interviewed by the “Rolling Stone” magazine about her new album “Dirty Computer” when she immediately changed the topic.

Monáe always considered herself as bisexual but after reading an article about pansexuality, she thought: “Oh, these are things I identify with too. I’m open to learning more about who I am.” After keeping her orientation hidden, she feels relieved by now.

What is pansexuality? When will it be fully tolerated?

This concept provokes great discomposure because it barely excludes anything. In fact, that´s exactly what pansexuality is about; the non-definition of love. It doesn´t depend on the gender identity rather than the sexual orientation. Pansexual persons fall in love with the human being itself.

Every time, things like this are brought to international attention, it creates discussions on social media. Can or will pansexuality and other groups fit in the partly conservative society of Africa? Patriarchal structures and traditional customs, norms are combating with elucidated, liberal youth and western influences, which come along with globalization.

The world is growing together, as well as western lifestyle becomes more and more influential. Idols of movies and music showing off the variance of sexual orientations, make their fans think more. People get educated, minds get changed and the most important thing: it is stated that it´s ok to love someone regardless of their gender.

Love is love, no matter who you are, no matter who you love.
