IT IS AN ARBITRARY DECISION TO CLOSE DOWN GSSM, GUPS YELLS AT MINISTER

The Ghana Union of Professional Students(GUPS) has described as an arbitrary decision to close down the Ghana School of Survey and Mapping following a disturbance caused by the students due to a sale a part of the school’s land to a private entity.

A statement issued by the GUPS and copied to Pinknews has therefore expressed the students body’s solidarity with the SRC of the GSSM.

*GHANA UNION OF PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS (GUPS) STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH GHANA SCHOOL OF SURVEY AND MAPPING*

The Ghana Union of Professional Students, a Union or a bloc of professional students across the country, throws its support behind every single legitimate step taken by the SRC of Ghana School of Survey and mapping in advocating for the school to be in operation.

The minister of Lands and Natural resources directed the closure of the school with immediate effect, ordering students to vacate the school premises and call on the teachers of this professional school to be assigned other roles.
This is an unfortunate development that ought to be salvaged to save this country from any arbitrary decision by authorities. It is mind boggling as a young country emerging out of poverty and underdevelopment would trade its education for what ever reasons.

The reason for the directive of the closure hinges on the fact that “students went on rampage, destroying properties of the land’s commission and a contractor at the site”.
Be that as it may, The Union is not endorsing any violent or lawless act. But to close a school that provides skills and technical knowledge to citizens of the country is a lazy approach and a gross show of lack of seriousness as a nation.

This same matter came up last year, The Union and the SRC engaged stakeholders on it but all efforts have proved futile leading to a mammoth demonstration on the streets of Accra by Ghanaian students.

GUPS therefore pledges its unflinching and unwavering support to the SRC of GSSM to get this matter resolved amicably. This is a matter of national concern and must be dealt with urgently.
