I HAVE NO INTEREST IN STOPPING REAL NATIVES FROM GETTING THE NIA CARDS-AKUFO ADDO

The President of the Republic of Ghana, President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has stated to the minority in parliament that, he has no interest in stopping real Ghanaians to have access to the national identification card.

He made this known at the 2018 graduation ceremony at the Ashesi University on June 23, 2018 in his speech delivery.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pointed out that, neither he nor his government has any intention of depriving the real Ghanaians from being issued with the Ghana card in the ongoing national identification authority (NIA) registration process.

According to the President, no Ghanaian should think their identity as Ghanaians has been illegitimated.  “It should not be in the long-term interest of anybody we enlist as Ghanaian people whose loyalty to our nation is limited to access to our free healthcare system”.

He again emphasized that, his oath of office cherish that he upholds the laws and protect the institution from being sabotage.

“I do not think that, there are more credible, basic documentary requirement for establishing nationality or citizenship than a birth certificate or a passport, an appropriate acceptable, mechanism has be provided in law to verify the claims of those who have neither” , he added.

The minority in parliament argued that those with the possession of voter’s identification card (ID) should be qualified to be issued with the Ghana card.

However, the president stands that, it is well-known fact that, there are many non-Ghanaians who obtained the Nation Health Insurance Scheme card (NHIS) with them possessing the voter’s ID cards as a proof of identity.

The President stated that “The Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that, the NHIS card should not be used as a form of identification to register for the voter’s ID card”. Therefore, birth certificate and passports still remains the established requirement to attain the national identification card.
